HELP US HELP THE CHILDREN, INC. |
In
1991, with the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, Ukraine reclaimed its
status as an independent nation and began the process of democratization. Ukrainian citizens face many economic
hardships due to previous government policies and present demands of
restructuring. CHILDREN ARE
PARTICULARLY HELPLESS in this situation.
In
1992, two Canadian couples arrived in Ukraine with the hope of adopting a
child. Through their visits to
orphanages, they discovered that these institutions, although orderly, and
staffed with attentive and kind caregivers, functioned with severe shortages of
food, clothing and medications. These
visits marked the beginning of Help Us Help The Children project.
In
1996 an American woman joined the efforts of Help Us Help The Children by
participating in their initial summer camp program in the Carpathian
Mountains. This experience changed her
life and thus the beginning of Help Us Help The Children, Inc. in the United
States.

OVERVIEW
Help
Us Help The Children, Inc is a voluntary, non-profit charitable
initiative dedicated to improving the quality of life of the children living in
orphanages in Ukraine. The purpose and
mission of Help Us Help The Children,
Inc. centers on providing immediate aid to those most vulnerable in Ukraine
- the children. There are more than
50,000 children in over 150 orphanages across Ukraine. A key principle underlying our
organizational mission is a strong belief in individual responsibility. This is manifested in everything we do:
·
Our organizational structure is based upon
relatively small teams carrying out specific projects
·
Specific individuals at each orphanage are
made responsible for the safekeeping and protection of resources that we
provide; their incentives stem from a desire to secure future support and
genuine care for the well being of their charges
·
We believe, it is essential that today’s
orphans become tomorrow’s productive and self-sufficient adults
·
We believe that individuals can make a
difference in creating a better world, and that each of us is responsible for
finding ways to do so.
